The development of new and innovative materials for additive manufacturing and powder metallurgy technologies hinges on the ability to produce metallic powders with customized chemistries and particle size distributions. Accordingly, the Bishop group is equipped with a gas atomizer and several down-stream items used to manipulate the powders produced. The team also collaborates with other researchers at Dalhousie which broadens the scope of equipment available.
Purchase of a research-grade gas atomizer is currently underway. System will be configured to safely atomize a wide range of alloys in batch sizes from 1 to 10kg in size. Operational system expected in Q1 of 2020. Additional information coming soon.
Purchase of an inert gas classifier is currently underway. System will be configured to isolate a prescribed cut of powder from a source with a relatively wide particle size distribution. Unit will operate under a controlled, inert atmosphere so as to enable the safe handling of reactive (Al, Ti, etc.) and non-reactive (Fe, Ni, etc.) powders alike.
